1. Quantum Comput= er Calculates Exact Energy of Molecular Hydrogen “In an important first for a promising new technolo= gy, scientists have used a quantum computer to calculate the precise energy= of molecular hydrogen. This groundbreaking approach to molecular simulatio= ns could have profound implications not just for quantum chemistry, but als= o for a range of fields from cryptography to materials science. While moder= n supercomputers can perform approximate simulations of simple molecular sy= stems, increasing the size of the system results in an exponential increase= in computation time. Quantum computing has been heralded for its potential= to solve certain types of problems that are impossible for conventional co= mputers to crack.

Rather than using binary bits labeled as "zero" and &quo= t;one" to encode data, as in a conventional computer, quantum computin= g stores information in qubits, which can represent both "zero" a= nd "one" simultaneously. When a quantum computer is put to work o= n a problem, it considers all possible answers by simultaneously arranging = its qubits into every combination of "zeroes" and "ones”

E= lectrons zing through the stuff in an unusual way, and they flow so easily = that graphene could someday replace silicon and other semiconductors as the= material of choice for microchips...if researchers can produce quasipartic= les with charge 5/2, then in principle they could make a type of quantum co= mputer that would work by braiding the particles' paths together.

2. “Quantum comput= ing research among top stories 2009

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 -- The U.S. Department of Commerce's National = Institute of Standards & Technology issued the following press release:=

Three science magazines have selected quantum computing research b= y the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as top stories = of 2009. All the research was performed by physicist David Wineland's group= at NIST's campus in Boulder, Colo. The group, which previously demonstrate= d many components needed for quantum computing with electrically charged at= oms (ions), combined them to make new experimental advances described in th= ree major papers published in 2009.”

3. NIST demonstra= te universal programmable quantum processor - Physicists at the= National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have demonstrated th= e first "universal" programmable quantum information processor ab= le to run any program allowed by quantum mechanics-the rules governing the = submicroscopic world-using two quantum bits (qubits) of information. The pr= ocessor could be a module in a future quantum computer, which theoretically= could solve some important problems that are intractable today.

6. Linear equations go Quantum

“In recent years, quantum computers have lost some of their luster= . It once seemed that they might be able to solve hard problems exponential= ly faster than classical computers, but so far, that's proved true only for= the factoring of large numbers. MIT researchers, however, have developed a= new algorithm that could solve systems of linear equations with exponentia= l speed--improving video processing, weather modeling, and population analy= sis, among other applications.”
